SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOLING OF CHILDREN FROM POOR FAMILIES AND TRAINING IN ICT

Our organization Mama Odari, is more concerned with the preparation of very young children and girls from the province of Tanganyika from poor families, by facilitating their easy access to normal schooling as well as vocational training for young girls; in various fields including tailoring, women's hairdressing and very recently in NTIC (New Information and Communication Technologies); which was since then a sector or field reserved only for men and boys. As a result, Mama Odari introduced an innovation by allowing young girls to learn and master the use of computers and moreover the internet.

PROBLEM OF ACCESS TO DRINKING WATER

Drinking water is a fundamental right for every individual, but in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and more specifically in the province of Tanganyika, this access remains a daily struggle for millions of people. Despite the wealth of water resources in this province located in the southeast of the country, the supply of clean water remains a persistent problem that mainly affects rural and peri-urban areas. The paradox of Tanganyika lies in the fact that although the province is crossed by many rivers and benefits from a climate favorable to irrigation, access to drinking water remains a major challenge for its population.

FAQ

1. What motivates your organization to do the work you do?

What motivates MAMA ODARI is its commitment to promoting the human rights and dignity of women in rural areas. Through its programs and projects, it aims at the legal, socio-economic and health empowerment of women, seen as a direct result of their strengthened leadership.

Concretely, our work is part of an approach aimed at:

1.  Achieve the goal of developing leadership qualities in women by providing them with the socio-legal tools necessary to defend their fundamental rights, recognized by national and international legal frameworks.
2.   Carry out the mission of collectively mobilizing women in a participatory dynamic, in order to promote their inalienable rights, establish equitable justice and guarantee their empowerment.
3.   Realize the vision of a society where women's rights are respected, where gender equality is a reality and where women actively participate in decisions impacting their communities.
4.   Honor the reason for creation , which is to amplify women's voices and fight against sexist norms that keep them in legal and social dependence.

2. What achievement of your organization are you most proud of?

Between June 2022 and November 2023, MAMA ODARI is particularly proud to have raised awareness and influenced 57 traditional chiefs and 39 religious leaders from different Christian denominations; encouraging them to become actively involved in the success of its unique climate justice project. This project made it possible to simultaneously achieve:

  • The creation of 115 palabre huts (“LUBUNGA”): These spaces dedicated to women have become essential for exchanges, capacity building and advocacy with leaders in favor of their human rights and dignity.
  • Formation of women's paralegal committees: These committees play a key role in combating sexist behavior and discrimination, while defending the socio-economic and health rights of rural women.
  • Changing perceptions and empowering women: These actions have transformed the vision of women, now recognized as autonomous actors and influential leaders, while strengthening their legal, social and economic role within communities.

3. How does your organization address gender inequalities in your context?

MAMA ODARI addresses gender inequalities as gender inequities resulting from historical and social injustices. These inequalities are manifested in gaps in status, opportunities and conditions necessary to enable women and men to fully enjoy their human rights and contribute equitably to economic, social, cultural and political development.

To reduce these inequalities, MAMA ODARI adopts an integrated and contextual approach based on three main axes:

  1. Community awareness:

Organization of educational campaigns to promote recognition of women's fundamental rights, particularly in terms of access to resources, education and health.

Valorization of complementary gender roles and awareness of the importance of women's participation in community decisions.

    2.        Advocacy with decision-makers:

  • Collaboration with local authorities to promote inclusive policies that ensure equal access to resources and benefits of development.
  • Defense of women's rights to influence decision-making processes in the economic, political and social fields.

    3. Strengthening women’s capacities:

  • Implementation of training programs to support women in the exercise of their fundamental rights, including their participation in decision-making and their involvement in sustainable development initiatives.

4. How does your organization work to achieve its goals?

To achieve its objectives, MAMA ODARI adopts several main strategies that reflect its commitment to women's empowerment and the promotion of their rights:

  • Creation of "green talking boxes" : These spaces dedicated to women, located in the open air under trees symbolizing climate justice, serve as places for exchange, training and advocacy. Women meet their leaders there to discuss their rights and submit proposals.
  • Training of paralegal women peer committees : These committees are composed of women leaders from rural communities. They receive basic training on human rights and paralegal techniques, enabling them to support other women and supervise the activities of the "palaver boxes".
  • Capacity building and awareness raising : MAMA ODARI organizes seminars, workshops, and forums to raise awareness among women of their legal, social and economic rights, while strengthening the skills of its members and local partners.
  • Support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) : MAMA ODARI provides holistic care for survivors through a specialized health center and referral and support services.
  • Advocacy and lobbying : Direct and indirect actions are carried out with local decision-makers, in particular customary and religious leaders, to influence policies and practices in favor of women's rights.
  • Research, monitoring and results-based management : MAMA ODARI carries out surveys, data collection, and analyses to evaluate the impact of its actions and adapt its programs to the real needs of the communities.

These strategies, defined in a participatory manner by the members of the general assembly, allow MAMA ODARI to work in a structured and effective manner to achieve its objective of legal, socio-economic and health empowerment of rural women while promoting gender equality and combating discriminatory norms.
